From Connecting Rural Areas to the B2B Challenge: Marco Saccu's New Course in Telecommunications

After the exit with Linkem, the Sardinian entrepreneur returns to the market with Medialive, focusing on custom internet solutions for businesses and institutions.

He is in his second entrepreneurial experience in the world of telecommunications, Marco Saccu, Sardinian entrepreneur and co-founder of Medialive, together with Luca Lai.

Medialive, operating in the internet services market under the name Media-Link, follows an initial company with which Saccu had been involved for years in connecting rural areas of Sardinia: "We had created a company that anticipated outdoor wifi networks. At the time, we started by connecting predominantly rural areas, then we structured wired and telephony services," Saccu tells Assoprovider.

The exit with Linkem and the restart in audiovisual production

The first company is thriving and attracts the interest of an operator, Linkem, which decides to buy it. The exit requires, due to a non-compete clause, Saccu to refrain from operating in the same market.

For this reason, founded Medialive in 1993 and during the constraint years primarily focused on audiovisual production. Then the call of the telecommunications market is felt again and he establishes a branch of his company dedicated to offering internet services:

"Our target market is companies and institutions. We have specialized in custom solutions in Alghero and generally in Northern Sardinia. In 2024, we have addressed the regulatory aspect and signed the first wholesale agreements," continues Saccu.

Changes in the Telecommunications Market

Saccu has experienced two different eras of the telecommunications market and helps us understand the transformations and new directions:

"In 2006, in one year, we brought home a thousand customers. There was a mass market, and we, operating in rural areas, were bringing water to the desert. Today, there are few areas with a lack of connectivity, and opportunities have opened up in the B2B sector for medium to large companies that do not want to comply with the services of major operators and cannot find solutions to their needs," emphasizes Saccu.

It is precisely the custom solutions – according to the entrepreneur, that allow small businesses to compete without having the marketing firepower of the major operators.

"More respect for the rules"

Saccu has been associated with Assoprovider since 2006. He chose to return, with his new company, to the association to have the opportunity to establish contacts with colleagues and read the many news items that are shared on the list.

However, for his new "journey" in Assoprovider, he has a specific request:

"When we tried to launch in the domestic FWA market, we found ourselves fighting against other operators who disregarded the rules. I ask that the association intervene more firmly against this type of entrepreneurs, to create a fairer and more meritocratic market," concludes Saccu.
