29 APRIL 2021 – In the third episode of Battaglie della Rete – the podcast by Assoprovider made with the contribution of Sicetelecom, TPlink, and AVM and the editorial support of Radio IT – we tell you how small providers have fought for their survival.
The small providers and the decree that saved them
Let's start from the early days of Arpanet (1969) and reach the early 2000s: within the folds of this time unfolds the history of Assoprovider and its battle for the very existence of small providers, threatened by a mechanism that favored large telephone operators.
Amid protests and extensive lobbying efforts with politicians, spanning the last government led by Giuliano Amato and the second one by Silvio Berlusconi, three key figures of that battle share how it was conducted and why the result achieved—the famous "decreto Salvaprovider"—was essential for allowing hundreds of small companies (the proximity operators) to continue existing and bringing the internet to the most challenging locations.
