Assoprovider, 19 years since the liberalization of Wi-Fi, a new crucial battle for the telecommunications sector

assoprovider

In October 2024, exactly 19 years after the historic victory that liberalized the use of Wi-Fi in Italy, Assoprovider is once again at the forefront to defend the future of the telecommunications sector. With the approval of the Omnibus decree, now a state law, we face one of the most critical challenges in our history.

2005-2024: From Triumph to New Challenge

In October 2005, Assoprovider achieved a fundamental victory with the approval of the Decreto Landolfi, which liberalized the use of Wi-Fi in public spaces, paving the way for digital innovation in Italy.

"Nineteen years ago, we demonstrated that our vision of a digitally free and innovative Italy could become a reality. Today, we face an even greater challenge, which risks compromising years of progress," declares Giovanbattista Frontera, President of Assoprovider.

2024: The urgency of action following the approval of the DL Omnibus

With the recent approval of the Omnibus decree, Internet Service Providers (ISP) are exposed to the risk of criminal sanctions, including imprisonment for up to one year, for alleged omissions in reporting potentially illegal activities.

“The approval of this law marks a critical moment for our sector,” continues the President. “Operators risk imprisonment for performing their work. This is not just a threat to us, but to the entire Italian digital ecosystem.”

 Assoprovider, immediate and future actions

Assoprovider announces a series of immediate actions:

  1. Legal consultancy for our members to navigate the new legal provisions.
  2. Initiation of an urgent dialogue with institutions to clarify the application of the law and mitigate its most harmful effects.
  3. Preparation of potential legal appeals to challenge the most critical aspects of the new regulations.
  4. Launch of a public awareness campaign on the risks of the new law for digital freedom.

"Our history of struggle does not end here. As we did in 2005, we will use every tool at our disposal to protect the sector and ensure a free and innovative digital future for Italy," states the President.
